Privacy Policy

Bookshelf Scanner

Bookshelf Scanner is designed with your privacy in mind. We collect minimal data and never sell your information.

Information We Don't Collect

Bookshelf Scanner does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information to If Then Dev servers. We don't use analytics frameworks, track your usage, build profiles, or share data with advertisers.

Camera Access

Bookshelf Scanner uses your device's camera solely to scan book barcodes. Camera access is requested only when you use the scanning feature. No images or video are stored, transmitted, or recorded. The camera is used exclusively for real-time barcode detection on your device.

Book Lookups

When you scan or enter a book's ISBN, Bookshelf Scanner queries third-party book information services to retrieve the book's title, author, publisher, and cover image. These queries include only:

  • The book's ISBN number

No personal information, device identifiers, or user data is sent with these requests. The third-party services used are Google Books, Open Library, and ISBNdb. They receive only the ISBN necessary to return book metadata.

Local Data Storage

Your library data is stored locally on your device. This includes:

  • Book details: titles, authors, ISBNs, cover images, statuses, locations, notes, and dates
  • Student information: first name, last name, borrower code, and optionally email and phone number
  • Checkout history: which student borrowed which book, checkout dates, due dates, and return dates
  • Custom statuses, locations, and app settings

This data remains on your device and under your control. You can delete individual books, students, checkout records, or your entire library at any time from within the app.

Student Data

Bookshelf Scanner allows teachers to enter student names and optional contact information to manage book checkouts. This student data:

  • Is entered and managed entirely by the teacher
  • Is stored only on the device and optionally in the teacher's personal iCloud account
  • Is never transmitted to If Then Dev or any third party
  • Is never used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than library management
  • Can be deleted at any time by the teacher

Teachers are responsible for ensuring their use of student information within Bookshelf Scanner complies with their school's data policies and applicable laws such as FERPA. If Then Dev does not have access to any student data entered into the app.

If you have iCloud enabled, your library data (including books, students, and checkout history) may sync across your Apple devices using your personal iCloud account. This sync uses Apple's CloudKit service and is governed by Apple's privacy policy. Your data is stored in your private iCloud container and is not accessible to If Then Dev.

You can export your book and student data as CSV or PDF files, and create full library backups. Exported files and backups are shared only through methods you explicitly choose (Files, AirDrop, etc.). Backups are stored in your iCloud Drive or local device storage and do not pass through If Then Dev servers.

Student File Import

Bookshelf Scanner allows you to import student rosters from CSV or text files stored on your device. Imported files are read locally and are not uploaded or transmitted to any server.
