BookScanner Book Leveler App and QuickScan for Schools share the same code, the same features, and the same data practices. This one policy covers both; wherever it says "the app," it means either one. We collect minimal data and never sell your information.
Fully Unlocked, Nothing to Buy Inside
Both apps are paid, fully unlocked, and include every feature. Neither has in-app purchases or subscriptions. The app never initializes, configures, or contacts any third-party purchase, subscription, advertising, or analytics service — no such service is set up, called, or sent any data when you use it. There are no advertising or analytics SDKs of any kind active in either app.
For Schools and Districts (FERPA / COPPA)
Both apps are teacher tools for looking up book reading levels. Neither is a student information system, and neither is designed to collect student data:
- The apps do not ask for, collect, or store student names, photos, grades, contacts, accounts, or any other personally identifiable student information.
- They do not create user accounts or require a login. There is no analytics, advertising, or behavioral-tracking service in either app, and no usage data is sent to If Then Dev or any third party.
- The only information sent off the device is a book's ISBN, title, and author, transmitted to book-information services solely to return reading levels and cover art. No student or staff information is attached to these lookups.
- Scan history stays on the device and, if iCloud is enabled, in the private CloudKit database of the account the device uses — including a Managed Apple ID administered by your district. If Then Dev cannot access it.
Because neither app collects student records, they do not create FERPA "education records" on If Then Dev's part, and they are not directed to children for the purposes of COPPA. Districts remain responsible for their own Apple School Manager configuration and Managed Apple ID data governance. If your district requires a signed data privacy agreement for either app, please contact us.
Information We Don't Collect
Neither app collects, stores, or transmits any personal information to If Then Dev servers. We don't track your usage, build profiles, or share data with advertisers.
To keep working, the app periodically checks its own service-status page and a configuration file on our servers. These checks send no personal information, device identifiers, or usage data — they only read whether services are available and which book-data sources to use.
Camera Access
The app uses your device's camera solely to scan book barcodes. Camera access is requested only when you use the scanning feature. No images or video are stored, transmitted, or recorded. The camera is used exclusively for real-time barcode detection on your device.
Book Lookups
When you scan or enter a book's ISBN, the app queries third-party book information services to retrieve the book's title, author, cover image, and reading levels (such as ATOS, Lexile, Guided Reading Level, and DRA). These queries include:
- The book's ISBN number
- The book's title and author (for reading level lookups)
No personal information, device identifiers, or user data is sent with these requests. The third-party services receive only the book information necessary to return reading level data.
Local Data Storage
Your scan history is stored locally on your device. This includes:
- Book titles, authors, and ISBNs you've scanned
- Reading levels retrieved for each book
- Cover images (cached for display)
- Date and time of each scan
This data remains on your device and under your control. You can delete individual books or your entire scan history at any time from within the app.
If you have used BookScanner Book Leveler App for years, the scan history from earlier versions is carried forward on your device when you update. That migration happens entirely on the device; nothing is uploaded to If Then Dev.
iCloud Sync
If iCloud is enabled, your scan history may sync across your Apple devices using whichever iCloud account the device is signed into — a personal Apple Account or a Managed Apple ID issued through Apple School Manager. This sync uses Apple's CloudKit service and is governed by Apple's privacy policy. Your data is stored in that account's private CloudKit database — never in a shared or public database — and is administered by whoever controls that Apple Account or Managed Apple ID. It is not accessible to If Then Dev. Each app keeps its own private iCloud database, so scan history syncs between your devices running the same app, not between BookScanner Book Leveler App and QuickScan for Schools.
Home Screen Widgets
Each app's Home Screen widgets display your recently scanned books. This data is shared between the main app and widget extension using a secure App Group container on your device. Widget data never leaves your device except through iCloud sync (if enabled).
Spotlight Search
The app indexes your scanned books for iOS Spotlight search, allowing you to quickly find books from your Home Screen. This index is stored locally on your device and is managed by iOS.
Data Export and Import
You can export your scan history as CSV or PDF files using the built-in export feature. Exported data is shared only through methods you explicitly choose (email, AirDrop, Files, etc.). You can also import a CSV file you select; imported book data is stored locally on your device just like scanned books.
Gap Report
Either app can export a one-page Classroom Library Gap Report summarizing how a classroom's leveled books spread across reading-level bands. This report contains aggregate band counts only — no student names, no student records, and no individual book titles. It carries the app's own attribution and a link to that app on the App Store, and is shared only through methods you explicitly choose.
Children's Privacy
Both apps are designed for use by teachers and parents to help children find appropriately leveled books. Neither collects any personal information from users of any age. Children should use either app under adult supervision.

Data Accuracy
Reading level information is retrieved from third-party sources and may not be available for all books. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or availability of reading level data. Always verify reading levels through official sources when accuracy is critical.
License
BookScanner Book Leveler App and QuickScan for Schools are each licensed under Apple's standard End User License Agreement, including Apple's Volume Purchase / Apple School Manager terms where applicable. The license is limited, revocable, and non-transferable.
